Introducing the Leg Press by

RenEx Equipment Logo

We are proud to represent a philosophy and protocol that can help so many people reach their health and fitness goals safely and efficiently.

And with the new RenEx Equipment line by Renaissance Exercise Equipment, Ltd. we are finally able to offer all three of the essential components required to experience Renaissance Exercise:

Protocol

Environment

Equipment

Our new machines are the purest expression of painstaking skill, distinctive design, and our unceasing commitment to upholding and facilitating the real primary objective of exercise.

We have a tremendous passion for exercise machines and aim to create enduring, timeless instruments that set a peerless standard.

For our iconic flagship, the Leg Press, we had to set that standard higher than ever.

leg press

Leg Press by RenEx

It’s simple.

Leg press is the most important, productive, and meaningful exercise in our arsenal.

It is the alpha and omega, the king in the hierarchy of all exercises.

As Ken Hutchins has said time and again, if you could only use one machine and had to forego all others, it must be the Leg Press.

When Ken designed his original Leg Press over a decade ago, it was to address the shortcomings of products that were available at the time.

Ken’s compact design borrowed from what was worthwhile in existing products but he went several critical steps further to develop and an endless list of improvements, innovations, and features that permitted users to better experience the protocol and empowered instructors to better attend to their subjects.

The key attributes that made up the original formula for the Leg Press are all still a part of the newly designed machine, including how little floor space it requires, but they have been elaborately refined and upgraded for a truly unsurpassable machine; the most important overall exercise for the human body.

There’s no mistaking its iconic shape.

The profile of the new Leg Press remains essentially the same as its predecessor but with more brawn.

Everywhere you look you’ll see parts and fixtures flexing new muscle.

The streamlined body style, the taller weight stack header, the thicker guide rods, the integral, incremental add-on weights, the imaginative cylindrical calf-exercise attachment, the sleek bearing chambers of the new seat carriage, and the deluxe upholstery all contribute to the new leg press’s highly developed and polished appearance.

leg press calf attachment

leg press calf raise

Continue exploring its sharp angles and lean lines and you’ll discover even more design ingenuity including a range delimiter that now features micro-adjustable stops for true precision in tailoring the user’s end point.

No aspect of this re-imagined machine went unnoticed.

From the rigid fit and finish of all of the ancillary parts, to details like increased seat-tilt adjustability, to the high-quality powder coating of the frame, this new Leg Press stands in a class by itself.

Of course, the defining hallmark of all the RenEx Equipment—the advanced engineering of the resistance delivery system—shines in the new Leg Press, as well.

Ultra Glide and Freedom StackLeading the ample plates of the pin-indexed Freedom Stack™ is the UltraGlide™ top plate system, which delivers resistance in fluid, anti-friction style.

Regardless of how much or how little resistance you select, rep after rep, set after set, the weight stack will behave with remarkably predictable, zero-contact precision for a truly inimitable strength-training experience.

But wait, there’s still more.

Look closer.

leg press foot plateThe most impressive new feature of the Leg Press remains camouflaged right in heart of the machine itself: The footboard.

Those black spacers you see between the frame and the footboard are merely place-holders for a sophisticated force measurement system that delivers feedback to the working subject as well as the instructor, in real time, on an integrally mounted computer monitor.

Load cells attach to the footboard and receive compression force input as you push the movement arm to raise the resistance.

The cells are transducers that convert force into an electrical signal that is interpolated by a computer to display your actual force output.

Now for the first time, you can reveal not only the precise loading forces at the start and turnarounds of each repetition but also the level of force during successive squeeze technique repetitions at the pre-determined end point.

Since the inception of our protocol, instructors and subjects alike have been at the mercy of conjecture when it comes to evaluating effort in exercise.

The best we’ve been able to do is to rely on best-guess estimates within the limits of our equipment and our experience as instructors.

Now we finally have a tool to help detect malingering, segmenting, off-oning, and many other discrepancies and performance factors.

As an added bonus, the entire feedback system can be used as an independent Timed Static Contraction (TSC) device.

Force measurement and feedback means you have the ability to perform staged, isometric exercise with zero guesswork.

Now TSC can be as progressive as any dynamic system of exercise or rehabilitation.

Since its debut, the Leg Press has revolutionized what it means to exercise using our protocol.

Simplicity is the Ultimate Sophistication

Introducing the Overhead Press by

RenEx Equipment Logo Leonardo DaVinci said, “simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”.

This may be particularly true when it comes to exercise machines.

Needlessly complex designs may amaze and intrigue but they can also thwart the machine’s original purpose.

Elegant design, especially in chemistry, denotes a process whereby the end is achieved in the most straightforward, efficient path, without unnecessary steps and subprocesses.

There might be other ways to get to where you are going, but involve many wasteful as well as impractically expensive intermediate steps.

While we admit that elaborate mechanisms are sometimes inherently necessary to achieve desired effects, often it is the uncomplicated machine that most impresses.

The Overhead Press by RenEx Equipment ® is such a machine.

overhead press

RenEx Overhead Press

Its straightforward, smartly stripped-down body styling remains unchanged, exposing a recalcitrant movement arm that continues to challenge the conventional wisdom of experts and votaries of traditional weight training.

Articulating in front of the user, the machine delivers an exceptional feel to the exercise that is not only inclusive of more physical structures but also significantly safer for the back than common shoulder press machines that articulate from the rear.

Appropriately, it also happens to be much kinder to the shoulders.

To better facilitate the unique movement of the Overhead Press, progressive new innovations are revealed, each satisfying a critical function.

Let’s start with the subtly canted handles on the movement arm.

They now slope upward 20 degrees in addition to slanting inward to better accommodate the natural plane of the wrist. This crafty refinement significantly improves the user’s ability to establish and retain the correct torso attitude for ideal performance of the exercise.

In addition to better overall feel, this also means remarkably high levels of comfort, security and safety.

Additionally, the seat-belt anchors have been relocated rearward from their common fastening at the upholstery bolt to a special tapped hole that locates the belt at the desired hip angle rather than across the upper thighs.

Now, the moment you begin to push against the movement arm you can feel a profound reactionary effect commencing.

Your lower back sinks into the secure back pad with a very natural motion as your trunk flexes and your pelvis slides into the seat belt.

The harder you push on the movement arm, the more intense the coupling effect, the safer it is for the back and the greater the overall muscle stimulation.

And for instructors who have been plagued by performance discrepancies by their subjects, the new handles help to reduce the possibility of erroneously using the machine as an incline chest press.

To accommodate a wide variety of user strength levels, the new machine features an aluminum top plate (as opposed to the solid steel plates on the other RenEx machines) for a lighter-than-ever minimum starting resistance.overhead press 3

Additionally, the movement arm is better counterbalanced for an improved resistance profile for all users.

As with the other machines in the RenEx Equipment line up, resistance is delivered via the patented UltraGlide® top plate and Freedom Stack®.

The entire system floats on solid one-inch Class L rods and features a revolutionary new auto-centering tuner for virtually maintenance-free performance.

The incremental add-on weights on the Overhead Press feature a larger number of smaller increment weights than most of the other RenEx machines.

This permits appropriate progression from the lighter top plate.

The smaller increments better accommodate weaker subjects and the entire arrangement is integrated with the top plate and body frame for optimal efficiency.

overhead press 2Finally, a micro-adjustable range delimiter permits a dedicated squeeze technique in the finished position as well as Timed Static Contraction exercise, something not truly possible on this machine until now.

The delimiter also increases the level of safety by helping to prevent gratuitous shoulder elevation and inappropriate torso discrepancies.

The introduction of RenEx Equipment signals a revolution in exercise equipment design.

As evident in the new Overhead Press machine, our exclusive technology delivers better performance in all aspects of mechanical functioning.

In turn, this translates into an enhanced muscular and metabolic experience for the end user that exemplifies the Renaissance Exercise philosophy.

Introducing the Pull Down by

RenEx Equipment Logo

Here at Renaissance Exercise, our values and philosophy flow through everything we do to ensure that we remain true to our principles.

Through our partnership we have tried to set our very own high demands.

Whether we are expanding protocol theories or solving complex engineering challenges, we always actively seek to expand boundaries and are committed to continual improvement.

The essential element of our philosophy originated years ago when Ken Hutchins  said, In the beginning, I couldnt find machines that truly satisfied the necessary requirements appropriate to perform the protocol so I decided to build them myself.

At Renaissance Exercise this has become a key principle that represents our primary motivation for always giving our very best.

Hutchins’ original Pull Down machine was a visual marvel that struck a chord with strength training enthusiasts everywhere because of how it addressed many of the problems associated with conventional machines.

The anterior motion was kinder to elbows and shoulders and the box handle permitted natural trunk flexion without impediment.

Here finally, was a machine that enabled remarkable performance that involved more muscular structures than any other Pull down-type machine.

In addition to working the muscles around the elbow, glenohumeral and scapulothoracic joints in the shoulder girdle, Ken’s Pull Down also involved virtually the entire ventral musculature.

With the all-new Pull Down machine by RenEx Equipment, our ambitions were high: Make an already great machine even better.

As always we have Ken to thank for our success in reaching that goal.

Featuring a dramatic new silhouette and a host of innovations and upgrades, the new Pull Down indeed raises the bar yet again making it the most important upper body exercise.

pull down

RenEx Pull Down

Immediately, the first thing you’ll notice is the inspired new seating assembly, complete with a fully adjustable seat, back pad, and seat belt.

Without the need for a leg restraint the instructor can now have virtually any subject use this machine, regardless of lower-body complications or debilities.

Then there’s the new handle.

A simple but ingenious feat of engineering brings a compact design with handles set at a proprietary angle that promotes improved grip, is kinder to wrists, helps reduce elbow issues, and enhances the ability to perform trunk flexion.

Additionally, we’ve preserved the option to administer the use of hooks, when needed.

The new handle, seating assembly, and micro-adjustable range delimiter all coalesce to enable the user to properly engage in a productive coupling effect that truly accentuates performance of all aspects of pull down exercise and with greater safety.

pull down timing crankTo help individualize such performance, a timing crank now provides infinitely personalized cam profiles to each user depending on arm and torso length.

And both cam and drive wheel have been re-engineered from solid aluminum to provide increased stiffness at higher loads, not to mention an even more dynamic appearance.

As with the other machines in the RenEx line, the Pull Down machine possesses the full complement of the new standard upgrades.

Resistance is delivered via the patented UltraGlide® top plate and pin-indexed, auto-aligning Freedom Stack® which floats on robust one-inch guide rods for a luxurious feeling of lifting ‘heavy air’.

To make increases on the precision-cut 20lb. plates, incremental add-on weights are harmoniously integrated into the top plate and body frame for maximum operational efficiency and a streamlined look.

Of course, all of the remaining hardware is custom crafted to exquisite fit and finish.

The new Pull Down offers incomparable comfort, safety and performance innovations that once again exemplify the Renaissance Exercise mandate for progress and evolution in sophisticated exercise equipment.

We are truly excited to continue to share our latest innovations with you.

Please let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Introducing the Ventral Torso by

RenEx Equipment Logo

From the beginning, innovation and progress have been at the heart of the Renaissance Exercise ethic.

In practice, this means a never-ending pursuit to discover better ways to exercise.

Evolving standards for instruction, improved methods for performance and groundbreaking technologies for our equipment are all part of a network of practical strategies to create more efficient and effective systems to experience the Renaissance Exercise protocol.

The new Ventral Torso machine by RenEx Equipment® is a perfect example of this synergy.

ventral torso

Start with the name: Ventral Torso

The moniker is more than just a new name badge. It identifies the function of this radical interpretation of a compound pushing movement thus satisfying a little-understood characteristic of the pectoral structures.

Beyond any ordinary chest press, the unique design of this machine truly connects the user to the entire ventral musculature. The arms, shoulders, chest, and mid section combine to produce a triad of press, dip, and trunk flexion, all in perfect synchronization for a global upper body experience unlike any other.

Form indeed follows function.

Like the other machines in its cohort, the entire machine has been impeccably overhauled.

The familiar elegance of its asymmetrical frame reveals refined upgrades like a solid aluminum cam, integral add-on weights, and the patented RenEx UltraGlide® top plate and tunable Freedom Stack® for ultra-low friction resistance delivery.

ventral torso_2And a micro-adjustable end-stop delimiter serves to deeply enhance the performance of the squeeze technique in an inspiring new way.

To address the challenge of misbehaving shoulders as well as start-position discrepancies, a multifaceted new movement arm was developed with straight handles that enable collinear adjustment from narrow to wide. Now you can tailor hand spacing to individual subjects and accommodate everyone from petite females to the most strapping males, all with a higher level of comfort than ever before.

ventral torso_3After fastening the seat-belt and setting your hands on the new, firm handles, gradually begin out of the start position and you can feel the magnetic attraction to the tailored upholstery, a sublime feeling of security and a hint of the exhilarating intensity to come.

As you proceed through the range of motion, the nearly friction-less apparatus practically recedes making you the center of attention and sparking your muscles to life.

The new Ventral Torso by RenEx Equipment® delivers a merging of design and technology, unsurpassed attention to detail and the dedicated care that the RenEx TEAM gives to the entire protocol and philosophy.

Stay tuned….We have lots more to come!

The Time for Compromise is Over!

Introducing the Compound Row by

RenEx Equipment Logo

Over a decade ago, in his pivotal book Ultimate Exercise Bulletin #1, Doug McGuff M.D. made a request:

Ken Hutchins makes two incredibly sophisticated Linear Spine machines. My plea to Ken is to someday make a line of compound-movement machines (Compound Row, Chest Press,  Pulldown, Overhead Press and Leg Press) with all of the sophistication of the Linear Spine machines. All of these would incorporate positioning adjustments with threaded hand crank bearing assembly and digital readout, all movements on a linear bearing assembly, and low friction components throughout. I believe a line of generic routine machines is at least as important to the field as spinal machines. If you can’t mass produce them, at least make them for the select facilities who could afford to pay for their production. But put me first on the waiting list”

Well Dr. McGuff, admittedly it’s taken a little longer than anticipated but consider your request granted.

With the collaborative efforts of the associates of Renaissance Exercise, Ken Hutchins has developed a revolutionary new equipment line that far exceeds what anyone could have expected.

Exquisitely handcrafted in Orlando, Florida, these machines are made with the same pioneering spirit that Ken has brought to the industry from the beginning.

Only this time, all the stops have been pulled to create products with zero compromise and maximum performance.

Production of the new line will be limited and the machines will only be available to applicants who pass a thorough screening process and certification.

Already customers have placed orders in anticipation of what’s to come but at last we can give you a glimpse of the future.

We are pleased to present the first of a new line of machines from Renaissance Exercise Equipment Ltd.:

RenEx Compound Row

The next generation of Compound Row by Renaissance Exercise Equipment Ltd. continues the unique heritage of Ken Hutchins’ original vision for equipment that bonds the user to the machine.

The RenEx Compound Row features an updated silhouette with an all-new body that feels remarkably rigid and secure.

The intricate shape, a harmony of sharp angles, drive-belt contours, and exposed mechanisms, fully captures the sophistication of this machine from its offset timing crank to the updated bearing housings under the seat carriage.

Plush upholstery and stiff, beefy grips provide exceptionally comfortable feel to the user while Class L shafts and solid aluminum cam and drive wheels help to transmit the efficiency of the newly designed weight stack.

As with all the new RenEx dynamic machines, resistance is delivered via the patented UltraGlide® top plate and ‘tunable’ Freedom Stack® which offer unparalleled ultra-low friction movement of the weight stack, precisely engineered for your most intense workout.

Start by sliding the seat all the way back to facilitate the simplest entry for any subject without the hassle of complex entry/exit procedures.

Then proceed to easily set the start position by releasing a single pull-pin.

A similarly simple adjustment allows you to set the micro-adjustable end-point delimiter.

RenEx Compound Row Timing CrackNow you can accurately time the variable cam precisely to create the most personalized resistance profile possible and provide a tailored end-point to perform a productive squeeze technique.

Just be sure to prepare your client for the breathtaking workout to follow!

Whether your goal is to provide your dorsal musculature with muscle-shredding intensity or to successfully help rehabilitate damaged and feeble structures safely and clinically, the Compound Row machine by Renaissance Exercise Equipment Ltd. will perform to your highest expectations.

At Renaissance Exercise we are dedicated to developing and crafting the ideal machines for exercise and rehabilitation in concert with our protocol and philosophy.

This is just the beginning…..more to come soon!

Where Does Innovation Come From?

11 comments written by Joshua Trentine

Where Does Innovation Come From?

innovationI’ve always been very inquisitive about many things including innovation

Like many people, the chase of something has always been more interesting than the catch for me.

I tend to be most interested in the “whys”.

I like to know how things work; I’m often consumed in process and many times in areas where most are only interested in outcome.  I’ll work feverishly to comprehend how something works only to move onto the next thing once I’ve obtained the requisite knowledge to benefit from all of the gathered information.  Many of my family and friends think I’m a little nuts as I work so hard to gain mastery of something just to move on once I finally “get it”.

I’ve dabbled in quite a number of things, although there is only one that has passed the test of time.

It all revolves around this thing we are calling RENAISSANCE EXERCISE.

The reason is quite simple; the subject matter can NEVER be completely mastered.

Every time I think I have “it” all figured out, eventually a whole other world opens up and sucks me in far deeper than before.

1) When dealing with this machine we call the human body there are a vast number of variables to study; mechanical, mental, and physiological and within these subjects are many, many subdivisions worthy of study and even if you mastered ALL of these subjects there are still many unknowns.

2)   Even if the subject matter can be mastered, or let’s just say we apply the most fundamental 20% or core information to obtain 80% of the benefit, we still have the stubbornness of mother nature to overcome as the body will never be easily manipulated as it fights back to return to homeostasis in spite of our best effort and information. This all keeps opening up more investigation.

It’s safe to say we have a never ending challenge and I never lose interest in the body beautiful.

This situation appears to be a consistent trait with the RenEx team. This commonality along with accessibility of like-minded people has allowed for TREMENDOUS INNOVATIONS in the last few years. And that in and of itself makes for a VERY interesting subject of study and leads me into a story about the most exciting week of my life.

I’ve always been extremely interested in how people came up with an idea or how they’ve reached a position. How do people do the amazing things they do?

I’ve read much on this subject, some on purpose and many times by accident and there are recurrent themes.  I have included an excellent cartoon to summarize how great ideas develop. I would like to summarize these points in advance.

The number one most important thing ANYONE can do to facilitate an environment to manifest innovation is to create a place where people can develop ideas and teamwork pieces of puzzleallow them to mingle with others that are intellectually compatible in order to allow these ideas to develop and take on new form.

This is the backbone behind the TEAM RENEX approach.

The sum is greater than any of the parts.

Simple right?!

Well it can be assuming that you have access to enough like-minded people, that the group has had enough time and experience to recognize common themes and most importantly the entire group must be willing and able to work together in an effort to achieve common goals.

All egos MUST be set aside in order to become one.

This may sound easy enough, but in practice it is very difficult to get a group of strong- minded, intellectual people to really pull this off, but if you can you have the recipe for innovation.

engineering innovationI’m very proud to say that myself and my TEAM had the grand finale of a phase of this Renaissance Exercise innovation that some of us have been working on together intensively for the last 2 to 5 years and some of us have been working on independently for the last 12 to 30 years!!

Now before I share anymore details about my trip to Orlando, Fl last week and my meetings with 6 of the most brilliant minds in the field I would first like to summarize the recurring patterns that lead up to ANY great innovation. This will satisfy my interest in discussing the “why” these things happen, you gotta love PROCESS.

What leads to innovation?

 1.  A gradual precognition (a hunch)- important ideas take a LONG time to develop.  Rarely does a great innovation just happen like a lightning bolt. I’ve talked to many successful entrepreneurs, they are all 20 year/overnight successes.

2.  In industry good ideas take 10 or 20 years before they are really useful to the masses.

ideas collide3.  Good ideas come from a number of “collisions” and failures of many other hunches and often from multiple different people.

4.  Rarely does any one person have ALL of the components to a truly great innovation.

incubate idea5.  Ideas and projects need time to incubate and great innovations spend MANY years in an incomplete form before advancing.

6.  Great innovation requires multiple perspectives from different minds.

7.  There should be a system to allow these hunches and ideas to come together in order to grow and become bigger and better.

8.  There must be a meeting place. Phones, computers and forums can facilitate and speed up, but nothing beats live energy and the hands on experience of physically doing, seeing and sharing with others.

9.  The ability to get the right kind of people together and connect to form something brand new is the engine for creativity.

10.  Finding the right people… each one with the missing piece is the difference between a good idea that should have been and a great innovation that changes the way people look at something forever.

Click below for a great video on INNOVATION!

This video does an excellent job of summarizing what I’ve seen with the Renaissance Exercise movement thus far.

It also exemplifies why the RenEx Team has spent thousands of hours together on the phone and via email in the last few years and this past week is a prime example of what can be produced when we physically get together.

Last week we all met up in Orlando to put the finishing touches on the RenEx Exercise Equipment line.

It was most exciting to see and try out a physical manifestation of ideas that we’ve each had a hand in all come to life and to end up with a product that represents  how powerful the sum of our collective powers have become.

I hope the new technology can help some of the naysayers to see with their eyes that no this isn’t just SuperSlow and NO you haven’t tried it already.  Now of course the equipment isn’t even close to half of the equation, but it sure was cool to see and feel a representation of such hard work.

I’m looking forward to sharing still photos; video and we might even release some audio of presentations by the members.

Now   this wasn’t all fun and games most of the week was spent in our factory that can easily reach 100 degrees (No A/C) and we worked each day from as early as 4am until as late as 11pm.

Anyone who knows Ken Hutchins knows that this is common place so when in Rome we did as Romans….not to mention that the shear excitement pushed us along with little to no sleep.

I’d like to give special thanks to our model Anastasia. Her endurance was remarkable and I’m not sure any other model could will themselves through such a production.

I hope this post on innovation has sparked some thoughts, comments and even perhaps your own personal experiences or stories.

If so, please post them below in the comments section.

We would love to hear your thoughts on innovation!

P.S. Stay tuned! We shot a ton of pics, audio and video this past weekend (of our innovation session) that we will be sharing with you very soon.

One would assume that the most common questions asked of a RenEx instructor has to do with topics such as rep performance, load, fat loss, or a variety of other exercise protocol/ health related topics.

It may come as a surprise however that THE most common question I, as an instructor, get asked has to do with the anxiety that precedes the performance of High Intensity Training.

What may also come as a surprise is that among all of the anti-paradigmatic ways that we at RenEx approach exercise in general, the thing that may differentiate us from the mainstream more than anything else is our approach to the topic of dealing with workout related anxiety.

Anxiety is an interesting topic because for the most part its manifestation is a neural and psycho-physiological response enacted through a chain of events that originated from something imagined.

While it may be true that the perceived event that the anxiety is in response to may be based on events that actually occurred, the fact of the matter is that the anxiety itself is stimulated by something that happened in the past or hasn’t happened yet (and may never).

Not unlike any other instinctual evolutionary mechanism, anxiety is an essential survival response to stress, similar in nature to the fight or flight response.

Also, similar to the fight or flight response, its rampant stimulation is more or less self created in and by our modern day world.

Buttons that were probably only ever meant to be pushed a few times throughout a lifetime are now stuck in the “on” position constantly and all because we live in our heads.

Taking the preceding information into consideration, it should come as no surprise that the process of purposefully engaging in an activity (like High Intensity Training) that the body perceives as life threatening is going to be likely to create a certain degree of almost unmanageable anxiety.

What I find interesting at this juncture is the dichotomy between the commonly stated objective of strength building exercise and the traditional attitude often applied by trainers and trainees alike in fulfilling that objective.

If you were to ask most people educated in the field of exercise to state the objective of strength training you would almost unanimously hear something like this: “To apply a stress to the body in such a fashion that it stimulates the organism to respond via a process of adaptation.”

I’ll assume that everyone reading this understands the aforementioned adaptation is more muscle.

An often stated and sometimes implied corollary to the exercise process is that we must momentarily dupe or trick our body’s protective instincts into allowing us to stimulate our biology.

So why then have we always gone about this by primarily trying to find an external means to control this situation?

Notice I said primarily.

We try to manipulate external variables such as sets, reps, speed of motion, equipment, environment, nutrition and so on.

These things are most certainly required and do address the structural components of the stimulus, but for the most part they completely ignore what may be the most critical barrier that we must workaround: the fight or flight response and other psychosomatic variables like anxiety.

Remember that these, like the reluctance of the body to build muscle, are also part of the protective mechanism that must be duped.

Most don’t care to study these variables because this field often carries a “stink” of either macho posturing or overly analytic intellectual arrogance.

The former is “tougher” and less “flakey” and the latter is more scientific and prestigious.

I’m not pointing fingers as I’m as guilty as anyone.

It is my supposition however, that we tend to study the external things because they are graspable objects that fit nice and neatly into our conceptual boxes.

In other words, we can control them and we don’t like to study things we can’t control.

In so doing, we have (up until now) completely ignored the one thing that could be the rate limiting factor.

I say “could be” because one, I don’t know, and two I’d prefer not to stick my foot in my mouth.

To go deeper requires that we give up our ego and admit that we don’t understand ourselves well enough to make anything else matter.

Maybe it’s because I’m not bright enough to delve into the more mechanical issues of exercise, but duping the fight or flight response and the tertiary issues of anxiety has always been my primary area of interest.

Like I said, it doesn’t make much sense to me to spend so much time trying to stress and trick the body by assaulting it externally if you can’t get past “the anxious gatekeeper” first.

In my opinion, there is a sequence to the duping process and this sequence must be followed if a trainee is going to be able to consistently and skillfully apply the stimulus.

Skip one step in this process and stimulation becomes a hit or miss affair.

In a few days I’d like to follow up with my experiences in trying to “dupe the gatekeeper” and touch on the way I’ve commonly seen this approached, what works and what doesn’t, and why something so stupidly simple is so profoundly important.

I’d like to delve into the head of the trainee and maybe do a play by play analysis of a set of exercise.

Until then, please leave me your comments below as this topic of  fight or flight response is a topic I believe we will all benefit from greatly and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

REMOVE ALL OF THE CONSTRAINTS

21 comments written by Joshua Trentine

This past weekend, the RenEx Team had the unique opportunity to participate in a roundtable discussion with Dr. Doug McGuff. I think there were a number of real gems that came out of this conversation.

This was a two hour conversation with some of the best intellects in the industry.  This call is a must hear for anybody interested in High Intensity Training.

We talked about how the Renaissance Exercise protocol and RenEx Equipment fit in with this ideal and shared some of the RenEx vision with Doug. The bulk of the conversation revolved around optimizing the exercise stimulus in order to produce the ultimate exercise.

This was a monumental discussion as Doug’s work was one of the catalysts for what we are doing today.

So stay tuned as we will make this call and some other amazing content available to you soon!

In the meantime, one of the subjects that came up was how much time and energy has been spent on the stimulus, but also how ignored the ‘other’ variables often are.

The way most people evaluate their results is based on physique transformation.

I think most anyone can appreciate that the visual impact is dependent on diet and exercise.

Generally the leaner we are the more we can see the fruits of our labor. It is quite possible that we could be very healthy and have developed exceptional functional ability without appearing that much different. See the article ‘Proper Exercise and its Role in Reducing Fat’ here.

This paper discusses the relative importance of diet and exercise in the fat loss equation.

If it’s not already understood, it will be after reading this article that diet is the biggest constraint that one must overcome in order to produce the so called “result” which usually means the visual impact.

We should all be able to agree on this fact and there is certainly another variable that might provide a constraint for the body to synthesize the best result from our exercise stimulus.

Of course insufficient rest/recovery will restrict what the exercise response will be.

So, obviously we must remove ALL of the constraints that keep us from producing and responding to the most effective exercise stimulus and of course diet must support the desired result and without rest and recovery none of this will matter beyond a certain point.

This all feels pretty remedial considering that this site is so full of technical information, but I think it’s worth mentioning because these facts still tend to be ignored and using the end result to measure the effectiveness of the exercise stimuli leaves much to be desired in my opinion, at least when it comes to researching and evaluating methods.

In the end all that anyone really wants is the “results”.  I understand that is why everyone is here, but if we do not look closer, if we are not clear on what it takes to optimize the results, if we do not measure the right things, I don’t know how we can get any closer to the ultimate.

On a number of forums I’ve been asked to prove that the Renaissance methods are superior. Some of the requests have been ridiculous, others have been very reasonable.

Below is what I would consider a reasonable request although I don’t think it will be a proof for the RenEx program or any other. I do believe the request below has value and must be addressed in order to get the desired result for most, but I don’t think it should be the focus to establish RenEx as the most efficient or effective exercise stress.

See why…

“Josh, I applaud your efforts and sincerely hope they meet with success. Better tools, better protocols and increased knowledge could ultimately benefit more than just those who live in proximity to an OVERLOAD FITNESS franchise.

For all the discussions about the specifics of how/why/what/when, one very simple criterion will determine as much as anything the success of your efforts: results.

If your protocol and tools are as far superior to what I’ll call conventional HIT as you believe, then it follows that the results produced will be far superior as well.

I say this in a spirit of openness and respect: Since you are making the claim of having helped in developing a superior protocol and superior tools, it is incumbent upon you to demonstrate superior results. I neither believe in nor doubt your ability to do so. I truly wish that you can because, as I said, we may all benefit in that case.

One measuring stick that Dr. Darden has used that few others have is standardized photography. Few have used this because it is so objective, because it lays bare one of the truest gauges of any program’s efficacy.

I realize that body composition changes are not the sole measure of progress nor the most important to all trainees. Still I think improvements in composition and appearance would rank high with what most want from their training.

All of us – or nearly all of us – realize that comparing individuals proves little. People train all “wrong” yet have impressive physiques while some train “correctly” with only modest results for their efforts. However, the overall results of employing a superior protocol and tools would be…superior.

I’ve long wanted studies comparing the effectiveness of various training protocols to use subjects who share the most genetic traits possible. Ideally, multiple sets of identical twins or triplets would follow different programs while controlling for other factors. I think those results would be enormously interesting though not necessarily definitive.

So, Josh…any chance that you have the inclination/time/resources to obtain the cooperation of a pair or pairs of identical siblings to conduct such an experiment? One of the pair would follow the OF protocol while the other used conventional HIT or even conventional HVT training. You are obviously of a meticulous nature so I’ve no doubt the recording of any subjects’ strength gains along with photographic before-and-after comparisons would be of the highest precision.

Once again, I would truly hope you would produce superior results. Such documented results could be a strong selling point for OF memberships and franchises.

In any event, keep up the good work.”

AI1963,

Thank you for the thoughtful post and sincere interest.

I do think a picture is worth a thousand words.  However, I don’t necessarily think it proves the methods. I have loads of before/after pictures of clients. The most impactful ones are ALWAYS related to the people who manage their nutrition most effectively.

I appreciate the need for ‘proof’ and ‘results’, and I have plenty of these photos, but I’m not sure what they really say.

So, what can we measure?

We might be able to evaluate how severe the exercise stress was to the body… in other words what the immediate effect of the exercise was. This will allow us to refine the exercise stress in order produce the most severe exercise stimuli.

It is NOT my opinion that exercise stress is usually applied in such a way that is too severe. It is my opinion that the body is wired to avoid severe and direct exercise stress and will circumvent the stimuli where ever possible. I believe testing efforts should be focused on optimizing this stimulus.

If somehow we can concentrate the stimuli to a degree that is maximal we can start to work backwards from there.

In my opinion trying to evaluate the outcome, what the body has synthesized from the exercise, is too inconsistent to really ever tell us anything but artifacts. There are just way too many variables to account for.

I’m not going to list them all, but just two really big variables that affect what the body actually produces from exercise are the subject’s experience; a newbie compared to someone who has trained 20 years.

The other big one that has been down played by the H.I.T crowd is diet. I can radically change by body comp by changing diet alone.

My interest going forward is optimizing the stimuli and measuring that.

The end result, what is synthesized, is always going to be a product of stimuli, diet and rest/recovery.

I believe RENAISSANCE EXERCISE can produce better results.

I know for a fact that we do so in a more time efficient manner.

I don’t think it’s hard to produce good comparison photography results. Like I said we have them, but it always depends just as much on the other variables.

I’d like to put my money and time into demonstrating just how well we can produce the stimuli. That being said what you SEE in the way of client ‘results’ will always depend on how well they did when I wasn’t with them.

So….if this is the “measuring stick” what are we REALLY measuring???

We’re not measuring the effectiveness of the exercise program, but to a great extent our ability to get the subject to modify their behavior when they’re not exercising.

If this is the case perhaps a life coach, personal chef, a deserted island or a psychologist has the best program.

The industry standard IS before/after comparison photography.

In my opinion this medium has been horribly abused.

Nonetheless, we’re probably stuck with it and I’m fine with using this as a feedback tool to encourage further behavior modification, but I think we need to set a higher standard with regard to demonstrating the effectiveness of the stimuli part of the equation.

Going forward my efforts will be geared toward evaluating process.  The outcomes will take care of themselves and will always be biased by the other variables, the ones that are largely beyond my control.

This leads me to an article that Al Coleman is currently writing.

I’ll end with a quote from him as it relates directly to this post and is a lead in for the next.

“The fact of the matter is that one must forget the outcome and focus on the process. This by definition is what a discipline is, and in our view RenEx is a discipline more than it is a system of physical activity. Last time I checked, those involved in disciplines had lower attrition rates than so called “exercise programs”. Disciplines usually involve careful study and wholehearted devotion to the process, whereas “exercise programs” usually require one to just “show up” and expect ‘results’.” –Al Coleman

“Why Can’t I Do This On My Own…”

19 comments written by Joshua Trentine

I wanted to share this short but profound insight from Gus Diamantopoulos:

“Here are some reasons we can’t do Renaissance Exercise on our own:

-Most of us don’t want to rush from exercise to exercise.  Keeping total transition time down is a necessary ingredient to ensure maximal effectiveness and intensity.

-Most of us don’t have the necessary environment: the ideal environment is totally quiet (and insulated from noise), low-lit, climate controlled (temperature and humidity), distraction-free, with ventilators at each station.

-Most of us don’t have the proper equipment. Only proper equipment allows us to work the muscle and joint systems the way we recommend.

-Most of us need proper supervision from qualified instructors because:

-Most of us can’t voluntarily push ourselves to genuine muscular fatigue; often we think we are at muscle failure when in fact we have much more strength left over. The usual compensatory reflex of a self-monitoring subject is to add variables AFTER the prematurely terminated set, which is not nearly as effective as going to true failure in the first place. (In fact, so called HIT variables are at the source of the reason why this approach seems to fail)

-Most of us can’t remember to breathe freely; precisely when it matters most, we all take to breath-holding or Val Salva which always serves to not only increase the risks of injury but also contributes to reducing the effectiveness of the exercise.

-Most of us can’t remember to avoid jabbing and off/oning as fatigue sets in; once you start to jab at the resistance, you are likely to merge this inappropriate behavior with Val Salva and therefore double your discrepancies.

Most of us aren’t ready to concentrate; our bodies instinctively hate the inroading process and only though strict intellectual focus can one remain motivated. Unfortunately, when left to our own devices, our instincts always win and our focus is lost. In fact, as fatigue sets in few people understand that space and time perceptions become warped and skewed. As such we become temporarily incapable of any semblance of clarity of thought to direct our own actions.

-Most of us forget the primary objective; left to our own devices, eventually we fall back playing a numbers game (how much weight, how many reps, how much time) and this approach is meaningless.”

Just as the title of this post is “Why Can’t I Do This On My Own?” we have a HUGE announcement coming up on Wednesday explaining why I can’t change lives on my own as well.

Stay tuned for the BREAKING NEWS on Wednesday as this might just affect you personally.

In the meantime, post any comments below and we’ll personally reply and show your love and click the Facebook Like button below as well!
